First of all, who are these mysterious "two audiophiles" you keep referring to? Am I one of them? Am I one of the people you mention who ought to return "their apparently defectiive hardware"? What makes you think I even OWN an IPod? Sorry I just don't get it. And I don't understand the hostile tone of your message. Are you an Apple engineer or something?If the code used in the IPod is failing to recover all the information from a lossless-compressed file, OF COURSE that would be a malfunction...though the "design defect" would more likely be in the software the IPod runs than in the hardware. And yes, it would be easy to fix, but that doesn't mean Apple would fix it. Where's the incentive? And would THIS be so easy to check? If the problem occurs in the D-to-A stage, how could you determine that there is no loss? I don't doubt that it's possible, but I wouldn't know how to do it.
