Why didn't you just say so or just clarify your statement?

I think that they just compare the bits.

As I understand the original question, the intent is to understand how codecs are validated. If you recall, there were many an engineer who actually thought back in the 70s that THD figures provided useful criteria by which you could evaluate amplifier performance.

There was nothing at all wrong about the testing methodology or accuracy of the numbers. What was not fully understood at the time, however, was the overall relevance - or lack thereof of assuming that was the only audible factor. I present the Crown IC-150 preamp as Exhibit A to support the fallacy of that assumption.

Perhaps, just perhaps, there could be audible timing or other unconsidered issues introduced with these compression schemes that a bit comparison does not reveal. While compressed storage schemes work quite accurately with data storage media, they do so by extracting a performance penalty. If you don't believe me, convert your Windows drive(s) to compressed and watch your access speed suffer.
