Does apple claim it to be bit for bit lossless? Marketing machines have been know to say things like visually lossless or audibly lossless which actually means lossy but they think its good enough not to be able to tell the difference.

I was working on encryption for digital images which was very low overhead by generating keys on the fly based on the data itself (so that you needed each decrypted block of data to find out the key to decrypt the next block of the data) To do this the data compression has to be lossless (bit for bit). Guess what - the JPEG lossless (a little used version of JPEG, but it exists) format is not actually bit for bit lossless on every image I tried - the decryption would fail because 2-3 bits would be off in some cases. So much for lossless...

I haven't looked at the Apple Codec, but just remember that marketing will throw around the word "lossless" when it is not 100% true.
