Apple Lossless.....

...says it's MPEG4 which is why I asked about it.

>tried Apple Lossless.... I did hear a *strange* sonic artifact.... Subtle changes in pitch (flutter, inflections, vibrato) were attenuated.>

I had a similar experience which I've described here before. I noticed some upper midrange grain on some music recorded with ALL. So I recorded a song in both ALL and AIFF and compared them without knowing which was which (listening to my 60Gb iPod through Shure E5c earbuds).

The ALL one had the grain, compressed dynamics and lacked the top end air and sparkle of the AIFF recording. So I rerecorded many of my older recordings in AIFF. Now, when I notice those artifacts on a song, I check and it's always an ALL rocerding - so I rerecord it in AIFF.

Lynn and others have suggested there's something else going on with the iTunes software or the iPod to create those artifacts - they say it can't be ALL since 'bits is bits' and the bitstreams are identical.

So the question arose about whether an artifact can be caused by 'uncompressing' the ALL file.

Will_S promised to record an older song, one I noticed problems with, in both ALL and AIFF, put them on a CD and send it to me to see if I could identify a difference. So far, I haven't received it.
