New Cans o' Worms.....

I have an iPod Video, and tried Apple Lossless.... I did hear a *strange* sonic artifact.... Subtle changes in pitch (flutter, inflections, vibrato) were attenuated. I had to do a double-take when I first noticed it. I've never before heard a format which removed or greatly reduced the vibrato from a violin or a singer's voice....

I then wiped the iPod clean and tried standard non-compressed (AIFF) data, and the music sounded normal again. I've since used only non-compressed formats.

Unlike software, there are no precise data patterns in music. So I question whether "lossless" can truly be lossless.

Digital audio is so damm difficult to get right without manipulating or compressing the data... I think these new compression schemes could create a new nightmare for those striving to attain musical satisfaction via digital formats.
