Not only is there no practical way of testing the transport mechanism (drive) by itself, there is absolutely no reason to do so. All digital players have a FIFO buffer that essentially eliminates any measureable jitter from the transport mechanism itself.

Exactly so. As I have pointed out several times in this thread, the transport mechanism itself (drive mechanism) has almost no effect on measured jitter whatsoever. This is exactly why Stereophile found the jitter on the Teac X-01 using the massive VRDS-Neo mechanism to be two to three times higher than the jitter on almost any other multi-format player.
Racerman also correctly points out that we still don't have a good understanding of the correlation (or lack thereof) between jitter measurements and sound quality.
