Home Tape Trail

Reel to reel, cassette and other analogue tape formats.

Interesting!

There just one thing I don't understand: should I be worried about the AT822 having unbalanced output? I notice that AT has an 825 which is the same thing but balanced.
First, does that affect sound quality, or is it something that the pros like? I have no balanced connections at all in my own stereo, but it seems that all studio microphones are XLR and I wonder what that means.

Also, since I really don't know what balancing implies, is it correct to deduce that the AT822 cannot be used with a Tascam US-122 which only has XLR mic inputs, or can the cables be patched? A quick Google search suggests that in audio signals, like in most cases, balance can be lost but not regained, so I find female XLR to male 1/8" but not vice-versa ... Is it just a matter of looking harder?

Thanks again!
