I'm a big fan/admirer of the TCD5, especially the PRO model which is the same with XLR inputs. They can sound VERY good, about as good as any cassette I've heard. And they are very reliable and long lastmng--I've been using mine with only occassional maintanance since I bought it 20 yrs ago! They run for hours on 2 D cells. The below site has TCD5 manuals as pdf's and some advice on use. "After the tsunami, reporters said their D5s kept on recording when tiny, spinning little minidiscs-and-dats gave up."

I would stay away from Marantz decks because they are much less well built than the D5.
