The sound system on my laptop (an IBM Thinkpad) is extremely poor-sounding. I have not apportioned the blame between the soundcard and the built-in speakers: now that you make me think of it, I realize I could send the headphone-out signal to my stereo and assess the poverty of the soundcard itself, but I'm pretty sure it would be quite disappointing.Anyway, I have bought a used Tascam interface and new Audio-Technica microphones (condenser microphones, which I think is the same thing as your electret recommendation). Now I'm merely waiting for the cable and stand to be delivered ...
