I use a Sony Minidisc recorder (MZ-NH1) for recording lots of meetings etc. You would have to buy a separate microphone as well (I have a small Sony ECM-717 that works quite well but there are other options, too). The nice part about the Sony is that you can record in uncompressed mode and the sound quality is remarkable. The unit also comes with a computer cable so that the final file can be downloaded onto a computer...I can convert these into MP3 files and send them to colleagues for review which is quite useful. The only pain is that Sony, in it's annoying stupidity and distrust for consumers, makes it impossible to make multiple uncompressed copies of the file once you download it onto your computer so one must be careful...still for what it is, the system works quite well.

I also have a small DAT recorder (Sony TCD100) but the minidisc is far more versatile.
