Most laptops that I have used come factory installed with internal soundcards, which leave much to be desired. Generally, you will come across LOTS of self-noise and static from other components in the machine. A USB or Firewire breakout box would eliminate this noise...M-Audio is the cheapest I have found.I reccomend Minidisc Recorders as the most affordable choice for field recordings. Watch you dont make the same mistake I did, however... The Sony MD line has a copyright protection feature which restricts you from transfering from the recorder digitally. A real disadvantage, the fidelity-loss of analog transfer. Be careful!
A high quality mic is, arguably, more important than the recording medium. I reccomend an electret, for sure.
