Hi.That's another great option if your notebook has plenty of free hard drive space.
I use an Edirol interface with excellent results on my Sony Vaio notebook, but mine doesn't have a mic preamp, so I use a Behringer mixer to route the mic signals to the interface. I've used this setup to do on-site band demos and live recordings with great results.
For your purposes, for ease of use and portability, I think the TASCAM would be the way to go. Even better than minidisc.
BTW: I think the copy-protection is for prerecorded minidiscs only. It shouldn't effect homemade recordings. My minidisc recorder actually has a regular line-out in addition to the headphone jack. As far as recording quality is concerned, they really are all pretty close to each other.
Knowing that you carry your notebook with you everywhere, I'd go with the TASCAM interface. TASCAM makes great stuff. I have lots of it. And later, you can experiment with multitrack recording & stuff too.
Good luck,
Bobbo :-)
