What you say is absolutely right, and thanks for the great pointers.I think I'd still like to try getting one of the USB interface that include microphone preamplifiers: of course they are more expensive than the iMic at $40 (and I'll say that's a pretty cool piece of gear, though I've always been quite happy with PCs), but I'm lurking on eBay and judging from past price trends I'm confident I can get and M-Audio for slighly less than $100 or a Tascam for slightly more.
For the microphones, I've also dropped out of the semi-professional market and I am looking at the $50-$100 range. There are cheap microphones by serious brand that have a rather respectable resale value, so there's no risk in being cheap, and as always there's a lot of opportunity, as you point out.
Plus, I should spend less time in front of a PC keyboard and more in front of a piano keyboard!
But I will check out Audigy and Taperssection. Isn't the net addictive?
