Go cheap and simple first

My advice is to stay with your laptop, get some open sourced freeware recording/editing software and a cheap usb interface and a cheap stereo condenser and see if you want to upgrade or if this is fine for your purposes. How does $80 sound. Not too shabby actually. I just bought a $400 minidisc that came with a small stereo condenser mic and it sounds pretty darn good. It comes with a little clip so you won't need a mic stand. It can be powered by any usb device it is plugged into and although it doesn't have tons of headroom, you can always more it away from the source. It is a Sony Ecm-DS70P and I've seen it online for as little as $49. For your computor interface on the cheap, Griffin Technologies makes a unit called the imic. It used to be for Macs only but imic2 can be used with win-tel crap too.( I'm a big Mac guy ) For freeware I use Audigy but there is tons of freeware out there so you can choose one that is best suited to your needs. Oade is a great source for some pretty sophisticated recording stuff, very cool, but, don't get lost in the trees. Seems like the forest is your trio and polishing your interpretations. If you really want to get into it, check out taperssection.com. Populated mostly by folks who record live concerts( read Gratefull Dead ) but are really deep into it.(some use $4k worth of mic's that fit in a hat!) I always found a great source of feedback , when I was polishing pieces I was working up, was to find someone or group that played different instruments from mine and critique each others performances.Good way to make new friends too.
