Reading your originial post, I assumed you were looking for a dedicated recorder, but yes, if you already have a laptop, that's a great solution. In addition to Tascam, both M-Audio and Edirol have entry-level products that would fit your budget and application. The Tascam you mentioned also appears to have XLR mic inputs with phantom power, so you can use any microphones you wish (the other two companies also have similar products). Also, you are correct, the sound card of your laptop is completely bypased with these interfaces.To answer your question about MD versus flash memory, it's not necessarily an issue about sound quality, they're just different formats. You'd also be surprised at the sound quality of MD recorders; don't let their small size fool you. I suspect most users of portable MD are quite young and easily impressed with features, so it's not surprising the marketing caters to that audience. BUT... if you already have a laptop and mainly want to burn CD's, forget about DAT, MD and flash recorders altogether.
