Advice on Portable Recorder (further reflection)

Because the Panasonic SV series are balanced (XLR) in and out only, you would also need to buy, or build if technically inclined, XLR-to unbalanced (presumably RCA) cables for playback unless you only intend to listen back through headphones. It's really not a big deal and I'd be glad to explain what all this means by phone or email.

The other question I forgot to answer was about recorder vs. microphone matching, so here goes...

If you're going to record to a lesser medium (such as a portable cassette deck) then it would be unwise to spend alot of money on microphones. If that's the route you want to take, then the Sony TC-D5M and a pair of inexpensive unbalanced microphones will work adequately. However, since you mentioned nuance and detail, and the recording of chamber music, I highly encourage you to try the setup I recommended previously.

With my previous recommendation you will find yourself with recordings that rival or quite possibly better most commercial recordings. You may be able to sell your music in order to recoup some of the initial cost.

By the way, with a little looking on eBay, you could find a used NT-4 for about $170 these days.

Good luck!
