Home Tape Trail

Reel to reel, cassette and other analogue tape formats.

here's a solution

Oade Brothers Audio is a good resource for concert tapers, so I took a look at their web pages looking for an economical solution.

An Audio Technica AT822 single-point stereo microphone:

...combined with an M-Audio Transit:
http://www.oade.com/digital_recorders/Digital_Converters/M-Audio_Transit.html

According to the home page, they're selling the AT for $220, and I think the Transit is somewhere around $80. The microphone is battery powered (no phantom power is requied) and comes with its own cable that has an 1/8" mini-plug termination. That would run directly into the Transit, and a USB cable runs from the Transit to your laptop. Simple... and the only accessory you would need is a microphone stand. I assume gain control of the Transit is done through the software, but a call to the proprietor, Doug Oade would answer that question. FWIW, he has an excellent reputation for being both very helpful and quite knowledgable.

A single-point stero mic makes setup extremely simple. I understand what you're saying about settling for mono, but everybody deserves to hear what a true stereo recording sounds like since there are so few examples in the world of commercial music.
