Marantz and McIntosh on top.
Dynaco and HK Citiation a notch below
Scott, Fisher, Sherwood, Eico
Bogen, Pilot, Heathkit
And dragging up the rear....Lafayette Radio.Grommes was relatively unknown at least in the NYC market.
Did I leave anybody important out? Stromberg Carlson? BTW, the best Japanese manufacturers were practically unknown in the US at that time, they came a few years later.
Interestingly, the mass market console producers, always considered a big step downward have actually gained in prestige, Magnavox units being a current collector's fad and prime targets for restoration.
One day I met a vice president of somthing called the Institute of High Fidelity which had its offices around Fifth or Madison at around 42nd street. I asked him why IHF amplifier standards were so lax. He said they had to have some standards to give their members enough exclusivity "so we can keep shit like Panasonic out." In those days, the term "made in Japan" was a code phrase for really cheap poor quality junk. And I thought the world had turned completely upside down with Japan turning out so much world class manufactured product...until I learned that insofar as products made there for domestic consumption, there is a surprising amount which has NOT changed.
