Did you try the software from Keith Howard to add distortion to music tracks or read his article in Stereophile? His conclusion is that no added distortion "enhanced the sound" and all distortion combinations he tried were inferior to the undistorted version of the track. He tried to recreate the "euphonic" distortion pattern of a tube amps and so on and so forth. Still he preferred the undistorted track. What he did find though was that some of the distortion patterns were LESS objectionable than others and I think this is interesting because there is no amplifier without some distortion. The conclusion that can be initially reached is that some patterns of distortion are more damaging from an audible standpoint than others and amplifiers having these patterns will sound less distorted and more correct than those with more damaging distortion patterns.
Cheevers thesis states rather obviously also that it is not the amount but kind of distortion that dramatically affects listener preference. That is the whole point of his attempting to incorporate the listening model into his TAD equation. His hypothesis is NOT that feedback is bad, although he links this circumstantially to amplifiers that produce patterns that give a bad TAD. I think you have misinterpreted the basic premise of his test, which is to show preference and then find an empirical correlation to this result. He points out that the degree to which the spectral pattern deviation from the hearing model occurs is the degree to which an amp will have a worse TAD.
"where the level of depression of harmonics is not considered in the analysis of feedback"
I assume you mean the reduction of the harmonic peak height in percentage of the main peak (ie. fundamental)? Isn't this covered in the TAD equation as relative % for the nth harmonic? If not please point out exactly what you mean by is not considered.
