Well, I do this for a living...

I use DBT's (and cognates) to evaluate all manner of things.

I've only ever run one in a home listening room, it was not that well structured (difficult to synchronize different CD players), and none the less it difference in various CD players was audible. For a portable the 400Hz noise stood out, for one of the home boxes there was audible distortion/frequency shaping that affected imaging, for another box there was something that listeners could ID, but I never got the chance to measure tha tone.

That was long ago, though.
