Re: Bass management or LFE low-pass filtering is required if using a sub

if you are using bass management to "second guess" the engineer intent when doing a 5.1 mix, then that's fraught with danger.

how would you know which 5.1 recordings have the low frequencies "duplicated" across the main channels and subwoofer, and which ones don't?

the answer is - unless you have intimate knowledge of the production details of each and every one of these recordings - is that you don't.

so the "best" assumption is that the recording is intended to sound optimal assuming 5 full range channels plus subwoofer, and the use of bass management should be to manage inadequacies/limitations in your system, and not to correct "excessive" bass.

i don't agree with your desire to have 6.0 channels, although i respect your right to voice that opinion. to me, there is a benefit to having a "standard" and sticking to it. we all know 5.1 is not an optimal configuration for surround music (no provision for height information) but the alignment to home theatre is very important for commercial considerations.
