... first of all, not all surround mixes are "ambience", many are quite aggressive.Secondly, regardless of whether an engineer uses the ITU configuration for monitoring or not, the 5.1 panning algorithms used in Pro Tools or Nuendo or Sequioa are mathematically based on the ITU configuration. So if a mixer decides to send a track halfway between front left and front right, the software calculates the right level to mix into the relevant channels based on assuming the "speakers" are positioned in the ITU configuration.
If an engineer is not monitoring a mix using an ITU configuration, it may well be the engineer is also not hearing the music the way the mixing console "thinks" it should be heard.
Now Michael as we all know is a bit of a purist, so it may well be that he's not in the habit of micro-panning multi-track recordings onto a 5.1 soundfield, but other engineers are. It's kind of fun, and I've done it myself, and let's face it, for pop recordings, being a purist does not make sense. The final mix *is* the reality.
