Here's what the recommendations are:Mix to identical, essentially full range loudspeakers. The minimum recommnded -3dB for mix speakers is 40Hz. Lower is encouraged. That's not what I consider to be midfi. Is that what you consider to be midfi?
They do recommend checking results in a bass managed sub/sat system to insure that the results are as expected. As the mixing engineer, it is their responsibility to make sure that they get sane results from a rationally implemented bass managed system. Why? Because the reality is that most of the time the mix will be listened to this way.
So create the mix for someone that has a great system, but check it for someone that has a system that needs bass management.
