This document is a good source of information for us all. Thanks. My arrangement is as described, and works well. The recommendation against using delay to compensate distance problems is excellent, I realised that too.I have a few remaining questions, perhaps someone can help explain:
3.6 (page 31): "The optimum distance from the mix position is between 6.5 and 7.5 feet, depending upon the particular monitors being used and the size of the room."
That seems very close, but nowhere could I find why that distance is recommended. Even in my small room, I am further than that... Should I move the speakers closer? What is the studio monitoring distance you use?
4.4 (page 43): "Use of the Center Channel"
This explains why "naked" vocals are not used, but does not conclude if, with a well setup center channel, "naked" vocals would be better. I have few disks using "naked" single channel sources (LAGQ guitars and Caroline Henderson), and I like that sound... It is the closest to pure sound, 1 voice in 1 full-range speaker, no phantom image to mentally reproduce. Is there a general dislike of "naked" single channel music or vocals in the industry?
4.6 (page 45): "Use of the LFE Channel"If we just assume that everyone has bass management at home, why even bother trying to reproduce "modest amounts of signal from specific instruments with significant low frequency content" in the LFE channel? The next page suggest low-pass filtering the LFE channel... Wouldn't we all be better served by using this LFE channel as a sixth full-range channel, perhaps for rear center speaker, which is recommended in section 4.3, and is probably as important as the front center channel. I believe various attempts have been made to use the 6th channel, including as a height channel... what could be a good trend in the future?
