*** Back then it was already known that the optimum setups for music and film where slightly different.
Dipole speakers on the sidewalls where recommended for movies. We all knew that that didn't do much good for multi channel music... ***You might be interested to know that it's not good advice for movies either. For example, not many sound engineers use dipole speakers to mix movie soundtracks either, for exactly the same reasons Michael points out - you get impaired imaging.
*** All surround music demo's form Sony/Philips did use the recommended ITU setup because in the real world most people with multichannel systems are likeley to use that setup. Most studios are setup this way too. ***
I'm not too sure about that, based on what Michael posted.
*** Not having the correct rear speaker distance due to space limitations or lack of time align adjustments could loose you a S40000 on your investment. ***
Again, I wouldn't be so sure. Based on my measurements of room response, room response from reflections influence phase and timing more than speaker distance, and doing time alignment doesn't necessarily fully compensate for non-equidistant speaker placement.
That's why I've ensured that even though my setup is not strict ITU, I do have equidistant speakers (for the 5 channels anyway, unfortunately, my surround back speakers and subwoofer is not equidistant).
