Speaker distance

This is far more critical for multichannel music reproduction and should be stated with far more importance"

Yes, equi-distant placement is far more critical than the degree of placement.

If I had invested $100,000 in speakers I certainly would experiment with placement to get a sound I like and with good imaging, rather than strict adherence to an organization's recommendations. That's my opinion and that's how I work. Not many rooms will allow strict adherence to a "standard" anyway. The ITU "standard" is a set of RECOMMENDATIONS, just as the NARAS document is. Any of these recommendations are starting places - not the destination or the "holy grail."

I'm not advocating that 'anything goes' as someone here wrote. The goal is to get all the speakers to work together - with stable imaging - and not have any one component distract from the overall experience. The center and rear speakers should continue where the LF/RF speakers start and not call attention to themselves. I look at each channel being a part of the puzzle, the finished puzzle becoming whole to create an illusion. Remove one piece and the illusion is spoiled.

I'm not sure why some are shocked by my opinions here. These very same views have been spoken & written about by almost every well-known surround mixing engineer/producer for the past several years. Just look at who was involved in the assembly of the NARAS surround recommendations. Most of my collegues have not been reticent in their opinions on the matter. The diversity of opinions hasn't hindered production of surround recordings that are universally enjoyed, regardless of a "standard."
