I don't think you understood what I was trying to say.

Our ears have the ability to estimate the distance of a sound source by using wall reflections as guide.

So if your speakers are not equidistant, time alignment through delaying the signal is not completely effective, because the real distance of the speakers is "revealed" due to room reflection.

Therefore, having equidistant speakers is the best solution.
