Re: Surround Playback Recommendations

I have spoken at the Home Theater Cruise, a number of AES conferences, several Surround Music Conferences, interviewed in countless publications and web sites, conducted public surround playback demonstrations - some at the NY Hi-Fi Show, and even wrote a couple of articles. In every instance (in regards to surround monitoring) I have mentioned our current surround monitoring preferences and the fact that I haven't used the ITU setup for a few years now. I have no control over what people notice I say or write. I should have noticed that our website had out-of-date information on it, but I rarely see the inner pages of our web site. I apologize for that gross oversight and am taking steps to correct the situation ASAP.

Yes, many of our colleagues are using non-ITU surround monitoring setups. A number still do adhere to ITU. All produce credible surround recordings enjoyed equally by home listeners with ITU setups and non-ITU setups.

I know I am making better surround recordings now than what I did back when ITU reigned. This has NOTHING to do with employing ITU monitoring or not. It has everything to do with my approach to recording and fine-tuning my mic techniques. I would make the same mic choices regardless of the monitoring.

I produced a track in 1996 to help introduce DTS-encoded CDs, "A Touch of Surround Madness." I mixed that track at my office desk on five tiny self-amplified Fostex speakers. Those speakers were not set to a standard of any kind. That DTS track has been used countless times over the years to setup and align surround systems. The fact that I produced the track under "rough" conditions has had no effect on the usefulness or effectiveness (or enjoyment) of the track. To this day, I get favorable comments on that production.

Just goes to show you. Huh!
