Which are notoriously difficult loads for a tube amp because their impedence drops very low at some frequencies, especially in the bass. I've been using them in my living room for some years, driven by a big Classe tube amp (CAM200) which puts out 400 watts per channel at 4 ohms.Recently, I set up an all-analog tube system in a very small upstairs listening room. On a lark, I took the Maggies out of my living room and brought them into the small room, although I had to move pretty much everything else out. I hooked them up to a Welborne-modded Dynaco ST-70 (with the Alan Kimmel-designed driver board, which uses a 6U8a and a 5751 in each channel). The Welborne has 4 Mullard Xf2 EL34 output tubes and puts out an honest 28wpc. I did make it easier on the amp by running a Vandersteen sub, and a high-pass filter, so that the amp didn't see frequencies below 80Hz.
The result was pure magic! The Maggies like a lot of space around them, so they were firing diagonally and my listening was necessarily "near field" But I've never heard them sound better. The "you are there" feeling was spectacular!
So I guess some of those rules ARE meant to be broken! Nothing like radical experimentation to find the golden path, right?
