Re: 55 watts tube vs 600 watts SS...Rules broken

Its funny you mention that becuase the only way I would use solid state is driven by a tube preamp and for bass only.I run electrostatic speakers from 120cps on up thru tube amps and I can use any amp with 20 watts or more to drive the panels..Since Im using the martin logan powered sub with a 450watt servo amp for bass,it has been real generous with dynamics.I feel as you do tho and SS amps make me nautious and literally nervous to listen to for any length of time. You will notice I said nervous? I will bet Im not the only one that experiences nervousness when listening to SS amps over a long period. Now being bass isnt super detailed and being its not in the range where it will carry harshness, the SS amp is a good choice because of its high energy and quick recovery and most of all its cheap for power.
I get some argument from friends that come over and say mikey, why dont run your logans full range? My answer is always the same.I want to dedicate the tube amplifier for the panels only and the bass for the solid state so I have more usable tube amp power for my panels. It does sound good full range to but I get crazy and crank it and then she will peter out if I dont have at least 100 watts when its full range.
