Haven't fried one yet. Every word I said holds true for SMD, through hole, terminal strips, 9N silver interconnects, whatever...

And we're not talking about just SMD. This discussion of soldering tools and techniques has been rehashed here multiple times. Every time it does you suggest your wet Q-Tip trick. Then someone tries to explain that the trick is not necessary with the right tools. I expect that you'll continue to offer up your trick. Don't be surprised if I continue to offer a balancing perspective.

I feel I owe it to the forum members that are just getting started. Just like any other craft, the right tools can mean the difference between satisfying results and a frustrating hack-job. If someone is getting started working on their car, the first thing I suggest is that they drop $100 on a decent set of wrenches. There's nothing more frustrating than rounding the corners off of nuts (and banging your knuckles in the process) by trying to get by with an adjustable wrench that you bought at the grocery store. If someone is interested in getting started in DIY electronics the first thing I suggest is that they drop $100 on a decent soldering station. There's nothing more frustrating than not being able to get a reliable joint by trying to get by with a cheap fixed output soldering iron from Radio Shack.

That's my opinion and I'll repeat it as many times as needed.
