Go to a surgical supply place and buy a hemastat (surgical pliers for clamping arteries). Bass Pro also sell something similar to fishermen to remove hooks from fishie's mouth. This makes an excellent heat sink for sensitive parts like transistors, diodes. Leave a long pigtail of lead before you solder (don't size down the lead)on the part to be soldered. Attach the hemastat to the lead then solder at the PCB pad. The heat goes up into the hemastat and not into the transistor or diode. Also not as much heat is applied to the pad.
