Pluto

Pluto is a nice project. I would be pleased if you'd report your results back here once you are done.

The board Linkwitz supplies is a quality, plated-through, solder-masked type. It should not require cleaning before soldering, or at most, you can wipe it down with a paper towel moistened with pure alcohol flux cleaner.

A bottle of flux cleaner is a good investment. You can use it to clean the flux residue off the board when you are finished soldering. It also makes a handy general-purpose degreaser and solvent (to be used sparingly because it is expensive).

What you really need is a good temperature controlled soldering like the Weller WTCPT (about $110). It is well worth the investment.

For solder practice, you should consider buying one or two Velleman kits. These simple kits, which run about $10-20 each, use the same high-quality PC board as the Pluto and can be assembled in about an hour. I recently taught my eight year-old son to solder using one of these.
