If you get to fine work such as surface mount, you will want a needle iron like Antex 15W mini soldering gun ANT-C/3U with
ANT-8G .012" gold needle tip and some thin gauge solder, such as 4% silver from Radio Shack. For peace of mind, find a good light source, such as magnifier with circular neon bulb on tractor arm as used for needle-point or fish fly tying. With a good needle tip mini-gun, SMD soldering is simpler than you might think.
