Technical and scientific discussion of amps, cables and other topics.

Hi Tom.

Hi Tom,

Yes I know I am not experiencing the typical SET setup. Like I said many times before my SET amp is a 40W class A amp. That's why I am amazed that you are the first person to seem to understand what that means here, especially considering how many technically adept people post on this forum. As you know tubed amps seem subjectively more powerful than a solidstate amp of the same rated power.

When I attempt to make comparisions I want to compare apples to apples, not apples to oranges. I've noticed when the many opponents of SET amps here start to disparage them, they usually compare a 3-8W SET with something like a 100W soldstate amp. That's hardly a fair comparision. They should try comparing a 3-8W SET with something like a 3-8W soldstate amp and then tell me all the virtues of solidstate.

So when I compared the Mastersound I compared it to another integrated amp I owned, an Audio Analoge Puccini. This is a solidstate integrated amp that like the Mastersound has 40W/ch (a review at link provided.) When comparing the Audio Analoge side-by-side with the Mastersound, the Mastersound seems quite a bit more powerful, with a much more lifelike presentation of live music than the Audio Analoge is capable of. The Mastersound got the gestalt of the music more correct via more realistic tone color, a deeper, wider more 3-D image and soundstage. As I've stated before, solidstate seems to present music like the best cameras do. Wherein tubes seem to present music more like the best holograms do. Understand that I could live with the Audio Analoge amp and be happy, but if I had the choice available to me I'd pick the Mastersound first everytime.

Tom I appreciate your offer to help on the LC9As. I already have a pair of pre-1990 TAD-2001s. The pre-1990 had a thinner beryllium driver than the post 1990 TAD-2001 did. The TAD-2001s I own are completely modded by Paul Butterfield and are the same type that Dr Bruce Edgar and others "in-the-know" use. I don't know if Paul or one of the other CFAS guys down here have or don't have access to a TEF machine. I'd certainly trust sending the drivers to you if need be and Paul said he'd work with you as needed. We're all pretty excited about the potential the RCA LC9As have.

As far as religion goes, I only brought that up because AJinFLA attempts to berate those who disagree with his audio beliefs, by comparing them with those who see the Virgin Mary on the side of a building. Anyone who espouses any other audio belief is automatically condemned by AJinFLA for "preaching." However one can preach one of two ways:

1) Speak postively about what they believe.
2) Speak negatively about what they don't believe.

And AJinFLA does both of these quite often.

As I presently own both tubed (Mastersound) and solidstate (Audio Analoge) integrated amps, CD horn speakers (RCA LC9A), dynamic speakers (Aliantes) and dipole ribbon speakers (Monsoon FP-1000), I think I understand the pluses and minuses of all of them, better than anyone who embraces any one technology as being "the way."

Lastly, Tom while I suppose it's possible that QSC and other pro amps have improved vastly over the years, the truth is I haven't heard one yet that doesn't make me want to shut off the stereo with 15 minutes of listening to it. I agree with others assessment that they make great bass amps. However I'd certainly be willing to listen to your setup if given the chance and adjust my opinion based on that listening session!

Keep enjoying the music -- Thetubeguy1954
