Technical and scientific discussion of amps, cables and other topics.

Re: Faithful reproduction is a fluid perceptual reality.

This might be at the crux of much bantering. From my vantage point there is no technical issue.
This is a mature technology not something underdevelopment. IMO for all practical purposes the technology far surpassed the potential of the format long ago.

The quest for faithful reproduction is a noble one.
What exactly does this mean? It was proposed that we could use live acoustical performances to evaluate a systems performance as measurements alone didn't seem to fully correlate with listening results. The can of worms opened by this qualification has in the long run led to additional layers of confusion/hyperbole/BS.

The notion of recreating realism is fantasy.
Yes and no. But it's mostly even more today than when the original idea's were proposed. I think "realism" pretty much carried US high end audio in the 80s and early 90s. With the emergence of TAS and Stereophile from the underground fueling such fantasy is now a detriment to their credibility not a substantiate of it. Plenty of believers were created who more than willingly provide the impetus to carry on the concepts - unfortunately many of them failed to understand the rigors involved and prefer easier bastardized versions of the original concepts.

Why stand on and designate it as audio science?
Depends on what "it" is. The concepts of the absolute sound and the use of live acoustic recordings to evaluate audio system performance is as objective a pursuit of science as are taking measurements. However most advocates of "realism" don't seem to realize that it's more rigorous than taking measurements and not a short cut.

For far and away most audiophiles (myself included) the objective use of realism is way too difficult a path to follow. But this doesn't precluded many of them from using it as a justification for their equipment purchases. Like anything else audio - it figures!

Give me rhythm or give me death!
