Okay, how about mono music in a much bigger venue?

With most concerts the music is mono by the time it reaches your ears and includes later reverb from the auditorium or nightclub.

Simulating a large venue at home requires surround sound.

We mainly determine we are hearing live music by seeing live musicians playing instruments!

A simple string quartet recording played through hidden speakers seems like live music if a real string quartet is pretending to play instruments. This was done in the 1960's at audio shows! Of course not so easy to duplicate a full orchestra because their dynamic range would overwhelm the speakers!

Two-speaker stereo has a serious handicap compared with surround sound's ability to simulate another venue. However surround sound gives the recording engineers more channels to screw up!
