Exactly...and this is what Ambiophonics attempts to do, with the addition of a stereo dipole for the "main" front speakers. The great beauty of Ambiophonics is that no special recordings are needed...any mono or stereo recording can be used to good effect. I am attempting a similar system but one using Bongiorno's Trinaural processor for the front speakers. This device addresses many of the issues brought up in the paper thetubeguy cites and you don't need to be on the center "sweet" line to enjoy it. If I had the capability of good crosstalk cancellation, however, I might go the stereo dipole route too.

BTW, the JVC and ADS Model 10 processors, and probably the Yamaha DSP too, will simulate a HF distance related rolloff in the ambiance channels in addition to the expected first reflection delays and reverberation. They are fascinating, sophisticated devices IMO, and have not received the attention they deserve.
