You aren't imagining hearing a difference when...

...you come home from hearing the Chicago Symphony Orchestra give a concert, put a recording of the same music on your sound system and you think it sounds very very different from what you heard at the concert (...even if it's as good as a fine 78 RPM shellac record.) Whether two components sound different from each other or not can only be determined by carefully set up fairly run double blind tests. How do I know? Because that's what it says on this web site's official statement of policy about comparing similar components to determine slight audible differences. How do I know that no matter which batch of components you string together, they won't sound much like real music? Because if there was even one batch which did, people who love the sound of music as opposed to equipment would flock to the distributors to buy it as fast as it could be made.
