Fantasia

"The amp "sounds" different than the EC. Bass is much better and more defined, and electric guitar has a timbre and crunch to it that was not there before. Dynamics? No contest. But cymbals were different too, hell, John Lennon's rhythm guitar on "Help" was as clear and pronounced as I ever heard it. Harrison's lead guitar on "Nowhere Man" shimmered. Was it just the difference in power?"

This is a great example of the fantasy one reads nowadays in audio magazines and reviews. Reasonably designed power amps have inaudible levels of distortion unless you get close to clipping (I said reasonably designed so don't talk to me about tubes). Dynamics in an amp are pretty inaudible unless it's a poorly designed amp! People's sensitivity to dynamic range and loudness is lower than you think, unless there's distortion involved. That's why you listen louder on a good system...you don't realize it's louder because there's less distortion! So possibly the amp that you consider to have the higher dynamic range has a higher distortion level. How about that?
