Re: Never said anything about sound system....

"What are your impression of whole house surge suppression?"

This is an entirely separate issue. Having been responsible for design and installation of "protected power" for vast data centers and networks, going back over 20 yeas when few managers would spring for the cost of a UPS while now few would want to be without them, the thinking in industry is that this type of "insurance" is well worth the money. Although the financial considerations are on a much different scale, the question of how much resources to throw at the problem is the same and willingness to spend has grown considerably over he years as the cost of providing it has come down and both the direct and indirect consequences of system failure has become better understood. When managers responsible for these types of expenditures approached me, they often mentioned that they were unaware of damage to hard drives and corruption of data from power disruptions for as much as two weeks after the incident causing it had occurred. My advice is to buy as much protection as you can afford. Whole house spike protection from heavy duty MOV devices is a good idea. So are individual UPSs for computers, peripherals, and communications devices like modems. I've purchased a whole house insurance policy which started last winter for my major appliances and I'm glad I did. Two central HVAC units have had blown control circuit boards in the last few weeks. The individual repair cost has been reduced by 90% under the terms of the policy and I will have recovered more than the combined cost of the premiums to date.
