Technical and scientific discussion of amps, cables and other topics.

I believe his point was to get someone who knows code well in the locale..

Norm: ""
I am sorry that I ever reacted to what soundmind said in response to my simple answer.""

Don't be. His response has really been along the lines of "don't take the code in your own hands".. Many things that seem to be better than code turn out, in hindsight, to be beddy beddy bad.

Big installs many times, have a different set of considerations to worry about. Just glomming bits and pieces from the big installation techniques can easily cause a more dangerous situation, as can using stuff from IEEE papers published in '93.

That paper missed out on a coupla things...first, they do not elaborate on the resistance vs depth with respect to the water table..they do not clearly correlate the changing resistance to ground with the integrated precip, and to me, the worst thing they did was discuss their copper clad "widgit", but provided no discussion on local soil ph vs galvanic corrosion of the two-metal rod they used. It is certainly plausible that their touted scheme corrodes away after 5 or ten years..who knows..

Good luck with your install..I note that the ele guy who upgraded my service used a honkin wire to the water pipe connection, and installed a second one near the service feed to the house..don't know if he overkilled, or if both are now local code.. My gut feeling is that he does it now because he can't tell if the copper pipe going to the street is metal all the way, the houses in my neighborhood are all circa 1850 to 1880.

"Audio quality grounding" is an interesting phrase..:-) IN POINT OF FACT, code exists for two things, and two things only...

1. The safety of everybody.

2. The inclusion of ground loops to mystify and annoy every damn person who owns an audio system..forcing many to jigger some tweak to get rid of the loops..what a PITA.

Lightning voltages overcome ALL impedances..what audio guys have to worry about is creating a pickup loop that generates voltages that normally would not happen with a single point install. That being either stroke induced, or earth current induced..

Do you have single or double bushing line transformers in your area?

Cheers, John
