In the first experiment, the subjects may have just been trying to please the guys who were administering the test. Suppose you tell me that turning the knob can reduce distortion, and ask me to turn it until it sounds right. After trying for a while, I don't think turning the knob affects the sound, but you must think it does or you wouldn't be asking. So,rather than contradict you, and possibly offend you, I just go along with the notion the distortion is affected, and say it seems to sound best when the knob is at this position. The second experiment has the same problem as the first one. In addition, there is no way of telling whether the subjects were commenting on the performance as well as the sound.
