Technical and scientific discussion of amps, cables and other topics.

I would like to follow up on the notion that sighted tests are sensitive to many factors.

If there is no correlation between what people prefer and what blind tests show, we can conclude two things. One is that, as you say, "Sighted testing has been shown, time and time again, to be sensitive to everything, including the color of the room, the food smell from the cafeteria." Or that the task assigned in blind tests lacks all of the other aspects of human enjoyment of music at all levels, such as the real pace of music, sense of sound stage, excellent timing of the conductor, etc. Which measure is more valid?

I suspect that there could be a great range of double blind tests, ranging from the 20 second exposure of sounds with the task being to say whether B is different from A
or not to mere comparing amps where notes are taken on each with no one knowing who manufactures amp A or amp B.

The former methodology has been reified in some fields of physical psychology and their journal. While I have participated in one experiment using the second methodology, I don't think there are professional outlets for such experiments, and certainly no comparisons of the results of the two.

Since the fundamental question is whether one amp sounds better, whether one speaker is more realistic, or whether one power cable allows electronics to sound more real, the operationalizations of "sounding better" and "being more realistic" to be convincing to others is crucial. Do the measure validly assess "sounding better" or "being more realistic?"

No amount of data will convince others who reject the validity of the measures used. And no one has shown whether different measures affect the findings.

Some would say that experts or everyone see some measures as the best, but this does nothing to convince those that don't accept the measures. Furthermore, it is not being "unscientific" or rejecting of "basic physics" to question validity of measures, it is basic to the scientific method.
