"for giving a large majority of the Iraqi people .... a life worse than before"Broad generalization based on two reports from a single source. Kind of like broad generalizations drawn from personal antecdotal experiences with "blind" tests.
Do we detect a pattern here?
The US is the only remaining superpower. Most Americans, I suspect, accept the fact that there will be times when high prices need to paid for the role the US must play in that capacity.
There is no guaranty that our leaders will always make the right decisions, and fortunately we live in a country where people like you who raise legitimate questions about our government are not beheaded for doing so.
Reconciling loss of life and limb in war with what a couuntry views as action that is necessary to accomplish its objectives will always be next to impossible.
I personally believe that in the long run our actions in Iraq will stablize that region of the world and break the grip of poverty, religious extremism and autocracy it has suffered under for centuries. I am not under any illusion that we will be thanked for the sacrifices we are making to accomplish that end. Given the degree of hatred towards westerns and particularly towards American that has been fostered by the unwholly alliance of despots and religious zealots designed to keep an entire area of the world under subjugation, it would be surprising if our efforts were widely applauded. That doesn't, in my book, render our efforts wrong.
Remember, in 1984 there always had to be an "enemy" of the state. Moreover, the tsars of Russia understood the role the church and its mythology played in ensuring continued suppression of the people. The communist leaders who succeeded the tsars understood the role myth and dogma plays in maintaining domination of the masses. The leaders in the middle east also understand that connection, and they will exploit hatred of America as much as possible to distract the people from realizing how far behind their region of the world is due to lack of democracy.
I believe that the advancement of freedom and respect for human dignity would not occur if it weren't for the upheavals caused by war. The iron grip of religious extremism and despotism seldom is broken through peaceful evolution. Hopefully, some day that will no longer be true.
Finally, I think one is living in a dream world if they believe that any of those clowns slogging through the New Hampshire snow could even come close to assembling as good a team as Powell, Rumsfeld and Rice. They are human and they are not perfect; but they're the best I've ever seen in their positions.
