Drunken sailor? Bush’s poll numbers on foreign affairs remain strong, but his numbers on domestic issues are dropping fast. This simply means that the American people believe he is adequately soused in the foreign affairs arena, but far too sober when it comes to domestic issues. But no fear! A virtual gaggle of drunken sailors is descending on New Hampshire today, all more than ready to tax and spend us into oblivion.
The majority of Americans seem to prefer the candidate who will promise the greatest number of governmental benefits to the “peopleâ€. Unfortunately, the government is the people and the people are the government.
What if we changed our lexicon and substituted the word “people†for “governmentâ€. How would this sound: I demand that the people pay all my medical, dental and prescription expenses, foot the entire bill for educating my children, provide fully for my retirement and subsidize my particular industry to protect it against foreign competition (and if that fails guaranty me a high paying job), not to mention fully fund pork and corporate welfare at the level necessary to retain all incumbent Congressmen in office, all the while ensuring the country’s security, guarding its borders, enforcing our laws, building and maintaining every possible means of private and public transportation and sending me to Mars?
Does anyone remember Lyndon Johnson and Guns & Butter? No, I guess not. We don’t have sufficient memory to even remember Guns & Roses.
Am I sorry we invaded Iraq? You bet I am!
I’m grief stricken that Saddam is behind bars, that there is rampant unemployment among Iraqi mass-grave diggers, that the torture chambers are shut down, that Bathist propaganda has been stripped from every Iraqi school textbook, that Iraq is quickly heading towards self rule, that thousands of Shiites are free to march for direct elections, and that Libya is dismantling its weapons of mass destruction.
How could any thinking man not shed a tear over such developments?
