Re: Reality can be painful -- that's why golden ears don't want reality

I simply think that excellent products can come from large companies and that absolute junk can be produced by small concerns set up by well meaning individuals. I would not pay a premium for a product built by a very small company for fear that it probably would be out of business in the not too distant future. I have great respect for designers that put their heart and soul in their product, but am hesitant in putting money on equipment that may become orphaned. So big is neither good or bad and small is not always beautiful. I feel more secure buying equipment from Arcam, ARC and Bryston than some well-reviewed units from less well-established companies. The pattern though is to have large companies make an offer that can't be refused to a company that was founded and built by someone with that passion and then to use the name to the hilt producing components that may or may not live up to the reputation crafted by that person. Another pattern is to have larger companies use the services of known designers and to have the product built offshore so that it sells at a decent price. As a consumer I like the idea, but still like the feeling of buying a product built close to home.
