Technical and scientific discussion of amps, cables and other topics.

You've got the wrong villains

Richard:

I'm sorry you have such issues with high-end audio. You must have had a bad experience once....

Have you ever thought about the completely fabricated claims and snake oil of the mass market audio manufacturers?

Perfect Sound Forever -- so what the Hell is SACD? I don't recall Sony saying, "we were kidding! THIS is perfect sound!"

Music Power - anyone remember this one? Once consumers decided they needed more power, the manufacturers invented ways to make things look bigger than they really were...

Ranges of amplifiers that went from 25W, to 40W, to 60W to 80W to 100W. Did they tell the consumer there was less than 2dB loudness difference up each step? Hell, no! Let's make 'em think that 100W is twice as loud as 50W!

Volume controls marked in dB, or with -xx numbers around them, even though they don't work that way...

Oh, and pots with steps so they feels precise, even though there is 10% matching between channels.....

Large enclosures with chrome fronts and nothing inside....

"It must sound good because it has 0.002% THD....." (even though we know it doesn't sound good....)

These things are ALL designed to create the impression that the consumer has bought something substantial and high-performance, even though the sound quality may SUCK!

Don't get me starting on the auto industry.....

Peter
