As a generalization, I think your statement is simply incorrect. My recent trip to CES reminded me that the vast majority of high end manufacturers do what they do because high end is their passion and they believe fervently in what they do. These are, in the main, highly intelligent, articulate people. But most of them will be lucky to break even or eek out a meager living.

In the high end market, the ratio of consumer to manufacturer is extremely low. I believe that most of the high end manufacturers I saw at CES could easily make more money in some other line of work.
