Technical and scientific discussion of amps, cables and other topics.

Because with today's technology, they are pointless

Setting aside the fact that they are not likely to result in increased sales and profits, it hardly matters what you buy. If you are expecting a sound reproduction system to produce sound like live music, you will be disappointed. Besides all of its other shortcomings, there is no standardization for making recordings so any sound system no matter what is is, if it doesn't have enough controls, even if it sounds "accurate" on some recordings, it will sound inaccurate on most others. As an analogy, bad as the NTSC television system is compared to later systems like PAL and SECAM developed in Europe, imagine it before the VIR reference signal and then imagine that all the controls on the TV are locked at the factory so you have no way to adjust it. Even if it reproduces a raster test pattern perfectly, set it for one channel and flesh tones are green, another and they are purple, another and the colors are too saturated, another and they aren't saturated enough. When asked why he didn't use an equalizer to compensate for the vast differences between one recording and another, the editor of a famous consumer audio magazine said here recently it's because it's too difficult. So what difference does it make if one wire sounds slightly different from another, one amplifier slightly different from another. In the real world, it could hardly matter less.
